R5 Annual Meeting Hotel Almost Full

Thursday, April 2nd, 2015

The room block reserved for our annual meeting in New Orleans is full but reservations can still be made on a case-by-case (last minute) basis (for now at least) by calling Shana Green, 504-585-4388, at the conference hotel. They will try to accommodate us until the hotel is full. Also note that the hotel is almost sold out for that weekend so folks registering for a room at the IEEE Region 5 annual meeting/university competitions event should make that reservation ASAP.  Once the conference hotel is full, anyone registering late will need to find another hotel.

Excom/Section Delegate Registration for R5 Annual Meeting

Wednesday, February 18th, 2015

Note: the deadline for hotel registration has been extended to Mar 31.

A  vTools form has been created to capture registration information for our region excom members and section delegates to the annual region meeting in New Orleans, April 17 – 19, 2015.  This form can be reached from here:
Only Excom members and Primary Section Delegates should use this form! All other attendees should use the regular registration form available at r5conferences.org. This form will be used to expedite registration for  EXCOM members and Section Delegates. Excom and Section Delegate registration will be completed from this data after validation. The cost will be calculated and paid by the region; however, EXCOM and delegates need to reserve their hotel rooms (hotel cut-off date is 3/25 but they will fill any remaining rooms available after 3/25 on a first come first served basis until the hotel is full).  There is a link to the hotel site from the vTools registration page.

Sections Congress 2014 Travel Plans

Wednesday, February 12th, 2014

Sections Congress 2014 will be upon us before we know it.  I’ve started a discussion thread on the R5 Online Community that  is intended to facilitate discussion and sharing of travel plans.  I’ll share any email I receive from excom members and delegates there and you are encouraged to join in as well.  Sections Congress will be held in Amsterdam on Aug 22 to 24, 2014 at the Rai Convention Center.  Details are on the web. Material that John Reinert has uploaded to the OC for SC2014 can be found there as well. You will need to be registered on the R5 Community and logged in with your IEEE account to participate.

R5 at Sections Congress 2011

I’ve been meaning to post this picture for some time and finally got around to it. I recalled that a photographer herded us all together at Sections Congress and took our picture but never heard about it after that. It took awhile to track it down but I did and here it is. Recognize anyone? (Click on the picture to view it full screen)

MTT-S Chapter Chairs meeting

R5 MTT-S Chapter Chairs

MTT-S Chapter Chairs from Region 5 at IMS2012

The IMS2012 (International Microwave Symposium) MTT-S Chapter Chair Meeting was held Monday, June 18th 2012 between 8:00PM and 10:00PM at the Hyatt Regency Montreal.  Dr. Qi Zhang – Hittite, Dallas Section, Dr. Charles P. Baylis – Baylor University, Dr. David Jackson – University of Houston, and Dr. Aydin Babakhani – Rice University attended from Region 5.  IEEE President Elect Dr. Peter W. Staecker, MTT-S President Dr. Nicholas Kolias, MTT-S President Elect Professor Madhu Gupta, MTT-S MGA Committee Vice Chair James Weiler, and Past MTT-S President Dr. Richard Snyder were also present.

The meeting focused on the answers to the following questions Chapter Chairs often face:

  • How do I fill out the L-31 Form every year?
  • How do I use the SAMIEEE tool for extracting chapter statistics – to benefit my chapter?
  • How do I get a Distinguished Microwave Lecturer (DML) to speak at our chapter meeting?
  • Why are some paperwork / requirements for IEEE so complicated – are these all necessary?
  • What are the hands-on tricks to hold successful chapter meetings with less or even minimum effort?
  • How do I find things I need quickly and an easy way on the MTT-S and IEEE web-sites?
  • How do I retain / recruit volunteers for my chapter successfully?
  • What are the tools and additional benefits being part of the MTT-S as a member and as a chapter?
  • We are a joint AP/MTT/ED/EMC/… chapter, how can we leverage MTT-S support for all our members?
  • What are the less known “free stuff” and support material I have available to make my members happy?
  • How can I groom a good successor, so I can eventually retire from this volunteer position?

MTT-S Chapter Officer Handbook has been updated and is located at   http://mtt.org/chapter-officers-handbook.html. IEEE used this as a “boilerplate” for the IEEE Chapter Officer Handbook which has not been updated since 2005.  IEEE Chapter Officers in Region 5 will find much updated valuable information in the newly revised MTT-S handbook to assist them with their IEEE business.
