Our entire professional community experienced a profound loss with the passing of IEEE Life Fellow John Meredith, whose many years of dedicated service to our organization, our profession, and his community set a standard of excellence in personal commitment. A lifetime member and dynamic volunteer, John joined IEEE as a student in 1960 and served as Region 5 Director in 2004 and 2005 and as IEEE-USA President in 2007. John was committed to sharing his passion for engineering and technology with the next generation and was active with the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. As an ardent supporter of the IEEE Foundation, John served on its board of directors from 2006 to 2014. For his efforts and dedication, John was named a director emeritus of the Foundation’s Board of Directors in 2015. Many IEEE members were drawn into IEEE volunteer service due to John’s encouragement and inspiration and he served as a trusted mentor to many of us who have become leaders and active contributors in the IEEE.

East Area Paper Competition Winners Announced

Content:

Congratulations to our East Area paper competition winners for 2019!

Joshua Evans, 1st place, Lamar University

Noah Nelson, 2nd place, University of Arkansas

Ian Spatz, 3rd place, University of Arkansas

The East Area paper competition is held every year by Region 5 of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). The East Area covers Arkansas, Louisiana and East Texas, and the paper competition is open to IEEE student members at Universities in that area. We judge the papers on their technical quality, writing proficiency and clarity. The judges this year were professionals in academia, government and industry and included both engineers and technical writers. Placing in the competition means that the student paper was able to convey a complex engineering topic to both experts and laypersons. The First, second, and third place Area Student Paper Competition winners receive $125, $100, and $75, respectively, certificates and a fully reimbursed trip to compete in the IEEE Region 5 Student Paper Competition.

IEEE Pikes Peak Life Member Affinity Group Formed

David Bondurant, 2019 Chair

During 2018, Russell Theisen, a Life Senior member from Colorado Springs, CO
collected the required signatures from the area to organize a formal Pikes Peak Life
Member Affinity Group, which will cover the entire Southern part of the state of
Colorado.
Our group was approved and our first organization meeting was held on June 5. Scott
Atkinson, Life Member Coordinator Region 5, kicked off the first meeting of 12
members and provided an overview of the Life Member organization and typical
activities. The attendees each introduced themselves to each other as a means of
networking.
Our second meeting was held on October 18 with 16 members in attendance from the
138 potential attendees in the area. Again, the focus of this meeting was networking
among the attendees.
David Bondurant, a Life Senior member from Colorado Springs, CO has volunteered as
2019 chair and is current organizing the first meeting expected in April. He will be
solicit other members to fill out the organization chart and help plan a schedule of
meetings for the coming year.
